A funny birthday rap doesn't need clever wordplay. It needs the person's name, a few things only their friends would know, and one line at the end that shows you mean it. Here's a structure that works, with examples you can steal.
The structure: six lines
Six lines fit a 10-second video and are short enough to remember.
- Line 1: "Happy birthday" and their name. Get it out of the way and make it clear who this is for.
- Lines 2–3: The first joke. One habit, told as a small story.
- Lines 4–5: The second joke, a bit bigger, or their age.
- Line 6: The turn. Something warm, even if it's still a little funny.
That last line does more than it looks like it should. A roast that ends with affection feels like a gift, while one that doesn't can feel like an attack.
What to write about
The best material is small and specific. Ask the group chat for one thing about them:
- What they always say ("I'm five minutes out")
- What they always do (leave one bite of food, screenshot everything)
- What they're bad at and think they're good at (parallel parking, cooking, karaoke)
- A story everyone keeps bringing up
- How they act about their age
"You're so funny" isn't a joke. "You laugh at your own text before you send it" is.
Examples
These are original examples, so use them as they are or swap in your details.
For a best friend
Happy birthday, Dana, you're finally here Said you'd be on time, that's a first this year You've been "five minutes out" since 2019 You owe me twelve brunches, you know what I mean Still screenshot my texts for the group to see Don't ever change, you're my favorite to me
For Mom
Happy birthday, Mom, yes, I ate today You'll ask me again when I'm on my way You saved every card that I made you in school Still text me "ok" like you're playing it cool Burnt toast, big hugs, and you never once quit Everything good in me, you started it
For a sister
Happy birthday, Priya, you stole my best shirt Told Mom it was yours, and your lying still hurts You get all the credit, I still do the chores Borrowed my charger, and now it is yours You told all my secrets, then kept all the rest Don't tell her I said it, but you are the best
For a coworker
Happy birthday, Marcus, you're on mute again We've all heard that joke, you've been telling it since ten Reply-all legend, the king of the thread "Quick sync" at five-thirty, the words that we dread You cover my shifts when I'm running behind Best desk in the building, you're one of a kind
Funny or sweet?
Match the person, not the occasion. A parent or grandparent usually wants sweet with one small joke. A best friend wants the roast with one sweet line. For a partner, choose based on whether they'd share it publicly.
If you want more of a roast, read our guide on how to write a roast rap. For a full birthday roast video, there's a birthday roast page.
Turn it into a video
Once you have the lines, the personalized birthday song page makes them into a video. Add a photo and the birthday person's name, and the person in the photo performs the song, with their name in the first line. You can write your own lines or let the AI start from your inside jokes.
There are also pages for songs for Mom, a friend and a sister.
