A roast rap has one job: make the person laugh at themselves, and make everyone else laugh with them. It isn't about having the biggest insult. It's about knowing the person well enough to say something true.
Start with the angle, not the rhyme
Before you write a line, list five true things about them:
- What are they always late for?
- What do they brag about that nobody's impressed by?
- What do they do in the group chat?
- What's the thing everyone knows and nobody says?
- What did they do last week?
Pick one or two. A roast with one running idea hits harder than eight unconnected jokes.
Build the line backward
The word that gets the laugh should come at the end of the line, because that's where the rhyme lands and the rapper leans on it. So write the punch first, then work out the setup.
Say the idea is that your friend always claims he's about to start at the gym. The punch is that he only goes for the selfie.
You've been "starting Monday" for seven straight years The only thing you lift is your phone to the mirror
Then cut every word that isn't helping. Shorter lines sound more confident.
Use the structure of a battle verse
A short roast follows a simple shape:
- Open by name. Everyone should know who's getting it.
- Start with the small stuff. A light joke lets them relax.
- Build. Each joke should be a bit sharper than the last.
- Finish on the best one, or on a turn that shows you love them.
If it's a rap battle, leave room for the other person. Answering a line they just said is the strongest thing you can do, because the crowd knows it wasn't pre-written.
Examples
These are original examples.
Roasting a friend who's always late
Jake, your watch is a lie that you wear on your wrist You showed up to your own surprise party and missed "Leaving now" means you're still in the shower "Five minutes out" means at least a whole hour You've been late to every moment of the year We'd start without you, but it's nice when you're here
Roasting a gamer
Sam, you say you're ranked, but you're ranked with the bots You blame your teammates for every bad shot Headset on, you're a legend in your room Mute your mic, please, we all saw the doom Twelve-hour session and a two-win streak You carried nobody, you've been carried all week
Rap battle: sibling edition
You told Mom that you cleaned, I watched you hide it all Your whole personality's a phone call down the hall You borrowed my hoodie in two thousand nineteen Now you say it's yours, you're the worst I've ever seen I'll give you this one, you're still quick with a lie But I taught you that move, so sit down and say hi
What not to do
A roast only works when the person is laughing too. Don't touch:
- Bodies, weight or looks they can't change
- Family trauma, health, money trouble or a recent breakup
- Race, religion or anything else about who they are
If you're not sure, ask yourself whether they'd show it to their mom. If not, cut it.
