If you've seen a losing football coach belting out a soul song behind a desk, you've seen the Outstanding AI meme. It took off in October 2026, and it's simple enough that you can make your own version with your friends.
Where it came from
The meme is built on Charlie Wilson's NPR Tiny Desk performance of "Outstanding", the Gap Band's 1982 song. NPR published the concert in June 2023.
In October 2026, an AI parody by The Burner on TikTok recast the band as college football coaches whose teams had just lost. It spread fast. NFL teams, basketball teams and politics versions followed within days, and then people started doing it with fictional characters and their own friends.
Why it works
The joke is the gap between the performance and the people in it. The song is warm and joyful. The people singing it have just failed at something. Everyone in the band looks delighted, and the viewer knows they shouldn't be.
That's why the format travels so well. It needs only two things: a group, and a reason they shouldn't be singing.
How to make it with your friends
You don't need to film anything. On the Outstanding AI page:
- Add one to five photos. One clear, front-facing photo per person. Photo 1 takes the lead close-up.
- Wait about five minutes. You can leave the page. The video is 15 seconds and vertical.
- Play it, then post it. You'll hear the song when you play it on the site. The download is silent, so add the Outstanding sound in TikTok or Reels.
It costs 15 credits, and the 15-credit pack is $9.90 with no subscription. There's no free preview for this one, because each video takes more to make, so check the sample on the page first.
Who to put in the band
The best versions have a specific reason. Some that work well:
- Last place in the fantasy league. The loser takes the close-up, and everyone else plays backup.
- The rec league team after the worst game of the season.
- Coworkers after the launch slipped again.
- The group chat that planned a trip and never booked it.
- Roommates, with the sax solo for whoever left the dishes.
Say who it's about in the caption. "Our team after Thursday" does more than any effect.
Getting a clean result
The tool replaces the people in a band clip, so the performance and the cuts stay the same. Your photos are what change it:
- One person per photo. Crop group shots.
- Faces clear and front-facing. Good light, no sunglasses, no hats pulled low.
- A different person in each seat. Using one person twice can stop the swap from working.
- The strongest photo first. The lead gets the long close-up, so a blurry photo shows most there.
Posting it
Turn on the platform's AI label, and only post people who are fine with it. Part of what makes this format fun is that your friends are in on the joke.
